On Monday, 18th August 2025, the Asokwa Municipal Assembly, through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (DSWCD) – Gender Desk, organized a sensitization programme for members of the Atonsu Fashion Designers Association at Atonsu Monaco.
The programme focused on the theme “Discrimination against Women and Advocacy for Women’s Participation in Decision-Making to Promote Gender Equality and Eliminate Biases that Hinder Women’s Progress.”
In the presentation, Diana Angkyenle, the Gender Desk Officer, highlighted how discrimination continues to pose a significant barrier to achieving gender equality. She explained that women are often confronted with challenges such as gender bias, stereotyping, limited representation, and restrictive cultural norms. These barriers, she emphasized, hinder the social and economic advancement of women.
To promote women’s active participation in decision-making processes, participants were encouraged to consider interventions such as:
1. Training and capacity-building programmes for women
2. Mentorship and support systems
3. Public awareness campaigns
4. Promotion of gender-sensitive policies
5. Increased representation of women in leadership and decision-making roles
Mr. Seth Asare Bediako, Unit head for Community Development also briefed the association members on the mandate and services of the Department and they were encouraged to contact the Assembly whenever the need arises.
The session was highly interactive, with participants engaging in insightful discussions and asking relevant questions, underscoring the importance of empowering women to take up leadership roles and promoting equal opportunities for all.
In total, 31 fashion designers took part in the programme, made up of 7 men and 24 women.
The Assembly commends the active participation of the Atonsu Fashion Designers Association and reiterates its commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women within the municipality.
