In line with the provisions of Ghana’s Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), which mandates the protection and promotion of the welfare of children, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development conducted monitoring visits to 58 daycare centres across the municipality, from 23rd June to 3rd July 2025. This exercise aimed to assess standards of care, learning environments, safety, and compliance with child protection regulations.
Focus Areas:
• Classroom setup and learning environment
• Caregiver-child interaction and supervision
• Learning and play materials availability
• Health, hygiene, and safety practices
• Documentation and record-keeping
Key Findings:
• Most centres are improving in classroom organisation and care delivery.
• Good caregiver-child relationships observed in many centres.
• Some centres still lack adequate space and outdoor play facilities.
• Unsafe play equipment found in several centres needing repair.
• Hygiene practices (handwashing and sanitation) need urgent attention.
• Documentation practices are improving but inconsistent in some centres.
Recommendations:
• Organise regular caregiver training, especially in child protection and care practices.
• Ensure repairs and maintenance of playground equipment for child safety.
• Improve hygiene, sanitation, and safety protocols as required under Act 560.
• Strengthen documentation, including health and attendance records.
• Foster parental involvement through PTA meetings and sensitisation.
• Plan follow-up monitoring to ensure recommendations are implemented.
Appreciation:
We commend all daycare centres for their cooperation and encourage collective efforts to promote the rights and welfare of children in the municipality, as required by the Children’s Act.
